18th International Cyprus Cup
A Weekend of High-Level Competition and International Participation
The Cyprus Water Ski Federation (CWSF) successfully organized the 18th International Cyprus Cup on the weekend of 5–6 November 2022. Thanks to excellent preparation, the event was a huge success, welcoming athletes from five different countries to the CWSF facilities at the Polemidia Dam. A large number of Cypriot athletes also took part, representing all age categories.
The second and final day of the championship was honored by the presence of the President of the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO), Mr. Andreas Michaelides, along with Board Members Elena Papacosta, Christos Neophytou, and Andreas Mylonas. CSO officials awarded the prizes to the winners.
In his speech, Mr. Michaelides warmly thanked the foreign athletes for choosing to compete in Cyprus and expressed his hope that their participation would be repeated in future events. He congratulated the Federation for the successful organization and its ongoing work at the facilities, also extending his appreciation to the athletes’ parents. He emphasized the importance of youth involvement in the sport and reaffirmed CSO’s full commitment to supporting all athletes and sports federations in Cyprus.
CWSF President Mr. Andreas Kokkinos highlighted the Federation’s goal to establish Cyprus as a sports destination, aiming to attract more international athletes to train at the Federation’s facilities. He expressed gratitude to the event sponsors, RCB Bank, for supporting the event for the eighth consecutive year, FXPro, and CSO for their continued and multi-level support. Mr. Kokkinos also praised the athletes for the high level of competition throughout the weekend.
Competition Overview
The championship featured Slalom and Tricks events with competitors aged 10 to 55 years old. Around 30 athletes participated in the Slalom event, while five categories competed in Tricks.
A standout performance came from Andreas Constantinou, who solidified his 1st place ranking in the European U14 category with an impressive showing.
In the Open Men category, Giorgos Papaconstantinou narrowly edged out Giannis Kokkinos by half a buoy in a closely contested final.
In Tricks, Giannis Athinakis claimed 1st place in the U17 category.
The event also welcomed Peel Jane, BBC commentator for water ski competitions, who joined KOTHASKI Technical Advisor Lakis Anastasiou and Scott-Ely Stuart in delivering the live presentation of the races.
