KOTHASKI organized the 19th International Cyprus Cup

40 athletes from 11 countries competed at the excellent facilities at the Polemidia Dam.

The Cyprus Waterski Federation (KOTHASKI) organized the international championship “19th International Cyprus Cup” on the weekend of 4–5 November 2022. The excellent preparation for the event delivered the expected results, and the championship was crowned with success. Forty athletes from eleven countries were present at KOTHASKI’s facilities at the Polemidia Dam, along with a large number of Cypriot athletes across all age categories.

The sporting events of the second and final day were honored by the presence of the President of the Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA), Mr. Andreas Michaelides, and Board Member Ms. Elena Papakosta. Also present was the former Director General of KOA, Mr. Kostas Papakostas. KOA officials carried out the awards ceremony for the winners. Judges and contributors who assisted in the flawless organization of the championship were also honored.

KOTHASKI President Mr. Stelios Constantinou noted that this year’s event set a new record in terms of the number of foreign athletes participating, as well as the number of countries represented. He thanked the event’s sponsors who supported the effort: the new major sponsor Capital.com, Finstella Ltd (formerly long-time sponsor RCB Bank), Cyfield Ltd, FxPro, and KOA for its continuous financial and multifaceted support to the Federation. He also congratulated the athletes for the very high level of performance they demonstrated during the two days of competition.

KOA President Mr. Andreas Michaelides welcomed the presence of foreign athletes in Cyprus and renewed the appointment for next year, despite the fact that he will no longer be KOA President at that time (as the term of the Board ends on January 31). He also congratulated the Federation on the successful event and expressed confidence that the excellent cooperation between KOA and KOTHASKI will continue in the future, regardless of any changes in the Boards of the two organizations.

Honorary Award to Andreas Kokkino
Before presenting the awards to the winners, KOTHASKI President Stelios Constantinou honored the former President of the Federation, Mr. Andreas Kokkino. Mr. Kokkino, who served the Federation for 30 years, was recognized for his long-standing, multifaceted, and invaluable contribution to KOTHASKI and to the development of the sport in Cyprus. As Mr. Constantinou mentioned, the Honorary President of KOTHASKI remains by the side of the new Board of Directors, supporting it with his valuable experience.
In his remarks, Mr. Kokkino wished the new President and Board all the best for the future. He pointed out that the new permanent and legal access to the facilities opens the way for further development of the sport. “Our facilities are well known internationally in the waterski world, as are Cypriot athletes for their competitive level and the high rankings they achieve,” he noted. Mr. Kokkino also honored young athlete Andreas Constantinou, who recently won the gold medal at the European Youth Championships, achieved the best world performance in his age category U14 (2.00/55/10.75), and is currently ranked first in Europe and worldwide.

Competition Results
The competition included events in age categories from 10 to 70 years old in the Slalom discipline with 40 participating athletes, as well as events in three categories in the Tricks discipline. In several Slalom categories, Cypriot athletes captured first place, showcasing the sport’s growth in Cyprus.
Also noteworthy was the presence of Peel Jane, Communications Officer for the British Waterski Federation, who, together with Scott-Ely Stuart, was responsible for the live presentation of the event.
